Department of GIS, Federal School of Surveying, Oyo is the oldest established PGD in GIS at any higher institution in the country with a track record of producing successful graduates, many of whom go unto work in the geospatial industry.
Resources available to you at the department of GIS include a dedicated GIS/Photogrametry/Computer Lab containing industry-leading GIS software. There are some units under the department i.e Photogrammetry Unit & Computer Unit
Apart from the state of the art Library that we have in the school, the department also has a reading room library for PGD GIS students where they can have independent reading or carry out research as the case may be.
The course structure is meant for 12 months calendar and is full time. The first (1st) module will introduce the students to the basic course while the second (2nd) module is all about Spatial Acquisition. Module three (3) will expose the students to Spatial Database Management we also expect that the projecis suoervision will commence this third (3rd) module. Moduke four (4) which is the final module is all about application i.e diverse ways /fields of applicability of Geographic Information System (GIS). On the successful completion of all the modules, the remaining months of the course will lead you to undertake a research project,examining in depth a particular topic relevant to work or interests. The students will identify an appropriate sustainabgle management issue to investigate, develop a proposal that details your research methods; carry out a literature review, and apply the theory and practicals you have learned to produce a citically informed analysis.
To be honest, the department of GIS is currently looking inwards about Industrial placement which is going to be optional. An individual placement is a fantantisc opportunity to gain experiences of a professional working environment and you can make yourselfn a more attractive proposition to employers after you graduate.
Our teaching and assesment includes lectures, practical(being carried out in the GIS Lab), seminars, self-paced learning, and directed reading. Assessment is a mixture of coursework and exams. Your dissertion will be assesed seperately.
The entry requirement by the candidates must be good honours degree or HND in the field of sciences, engineering, technology, social sciences and business management and courses such as Surveying, Geography, Physics, Computer Science, Town Planning, Estate Management, Geology, Civil Engineering, Statistics, Forestry, Cartography, Educational Management, Architecture, Marketing, and Business Administration. In addition, there must be evidence of National Youth Service or Exception certificate. There must also be evidence of computer literacy.
